2 - August 26-
September 6, in La Chiara di Prumiano, a Renaissance Villa outside of Siena Price: $1000
–1200. (full r/b included) This program is designed to engage students of various levels in a
relaxed and inspiring environment. General Classes: Students
will all participate in certain daily general classes, such as Guitar
Ensemble and Master class. They can then choose to participate in one
“Primary” and one “Secondary” class. During ensemble workshops students can
put together small groups and work on specific pieces each day. After dinner there will be informal jam sessions and impromptu
performances. Fingerstyle on the Road This course is for students who want to explore
the many venues of fingerstyle. Explore Brazilian rhythms and styles, country
blues, open tunings, Traditional Southern Italian
styles, including chitarra battente technique, plus classical and
fingerstyle jazz . This class will refine your basic techniques and send you
off on new directions. Other topics will include alternate tunings, and solid
right hand techniques. Mandolin repertoire- Italian and
Brazilian mandolin music. Including: tarantella and chorinho. Arranging and Composing This seminar explores arranging
and composing in a variety of musical styles including folk, Brazilian,
Italian and many other styles. Learn to arrange your own original tunes and
work them out with other students. Each participant should arrive with a few
of their own arrangements and/or compositions, which will be shared with the

Director For more than two
decades,guitarist-composer John La Barbera has enchanted audiences throughout
the US,Europe and Latin America. He has received awards from The Jerome
Foundation,Lincoln Center,the Martin Gruss Foundation, ASCAP, and
NYSCA. He scores music for films,TV and off-Broadway shows in New York
City.Among his film scoring credits are : Children of Fate, Sacco and
Vanzetti, La Festa, Tarantella, What’s up Scarlet and Neapolitan Heart.
His theater credits include : Souls of Naples,starring John
Turturro, at the New Duke on 42nd Street, The Misadventures of Peter Pan
for La Mamma theater and Teatro Patologico di Roma.,Garcia Lorca’s Yerma,and
has written three folk opera’s including Stabat Mater-Donna di Paradiso, a
passion opera commissioned by the
Cathedral of St. John the Divine in new York City.A graduate of The Hartt
School of Music,he was awarded a scholarship to study in Siena,Italy. He has
been teaching workshops in Italy since 1975. An original member of the group
“Pupi e Fressedde”, he recorded with them “La Terra del Rimorso” in 1979. He
plays an original chitarra battente made by Vincenzo de Bonis in 1978 . His
music blends the best of many cultures: Brazilain, Jazz, Classical,
Mediterranean,Renaissance and Medieval. One of the most sought after
studio musician in New York City, La Barbera has performed and recorded with
world class musicians and singers including: American Folk Singer Judy
Collins; Tsiddi Le Loka, South African vocalist and star from Broadway’s The Lion King; Susan Mc Keown, Irish
Traditional Singer/Songwriter; Visual Artist Matthew Barney; Palestinian oud
virtuoso and violinist, Simon Shaheen; from Italy: Maria Carta, Pupi e
Fressedde and vocalist/percussionist Alessandra Belloni; Brazilian guitar duo
DUOFEL and guitarist Paulo Freire; Jazz artists Mark Gross and Mulgrew
Miller; master percussionist Glen Velez ; Bansuri flutist Steve Gorn; Russian
vocalist Masha Itkina ; and
Countertenor Robert Crowe. John has perforformed at numerous festivals around
the world including: the Montreal Jazz Festival, Raizes Universais in Sao Paulo
Brazil, the Jones Beach Theater,opening for Sting, and Lincoln Center for the
Performing Arts. THE VILLA La Chiara di Prumiano is a Villa of extraordinary beauty set in the
rolling hills of the Chianti wine region of Tuscany. Recently renovated, it
